Year 2 parents and pupils enjoyed reading Purple Phase Book 12, "The Space Race" together in their Parent and Pupil Phonics workshop!

The book focused on recapping alternative pronunciations for graphemes we have already met, such as 'c' making the /s/ sound in words like "space," and "princess," 'y' making the /ee/ sound in words like "steady", 'ch' making a /k/ in words like "chaos" and the grapheme 'ow' making a /oa/ sound in words like "arrow".

Then, they answered comprehension questions using a range of different reading skills, such as retrieving, inferring and predicting, before completing an art activity together! In the book, the aliens race together in the annual "Space Race!" Pupils and parents created their own checkered flags, practising their weaving skills, to enjoy their own races! Aren't they superb?

Our phonics workshops for families in Year R-2 run every other week. All are welcome, please ask your child's class teacher or at the office for more details!
