School Council:

Our School Council has a very important role within school, representing the view and voice of each class. They will help vote on important issues and discuss these with our senior leadership team. We are dedicated to making improvements within our school and local community. Here at Our Lady & St, Joseph Catholic Primary School, we are incredibly proud of our School Council team. Representatives are elected annually from each class across the school. Candidates for School Council present a speech to their peers on why they believe that their attributes best fit the role of a school councillor representative. Over the year, children across the school will be thinking and discussing about how they would make our school a better place and how this contributes to being ‘an architect of a better world’.

We understand the role of a School Councillor Representative involves:

· Setting a good example to others in and around OLSJ

· Being an incredible role model to others

· Attending regular meetings

· Encouraging other pupils to use their voice and share their ideas

· Listening to our peers and ensuring everyone is heard

· Being brave and using our voice in a large group setting

· Explaining why school council have made decisions and what the impact of these decisions are

· Continuously reflecting and refining on how we hold discussions to ensure everyone is heard and feels valued

· Ensuring we consider all pros and cons when making decisions; so that decisions are fair and have a positive impact on many

Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs):

Here at Our Lady & St Joseph, we have a team of Junior Road Safety Officers. We work closely with our local school travel planning team within Hampshire County Council. We are passionate about providing safe solutions within our local area to support sustainable travel to and from school, in particular, the issues we face on Ramley Road around speeding and crossing safely. We hope that these solutions are also beneficial and supportive to those in the local community.

We welcome Emilia, Louis, Elizabeth and Aimee as the new representatives of our school for 2023-24.

★We have been awarded a GOLD Modeshift Stars Award from Cllr Steve Forester from Hampshire County Council for an ‘Excellent Travel Plan’. Here at Our Lady and St Joseph, we have reduced car use by 5%,  delivered 25 sustainable travel initiatives, 15 supporting initiatives, and 10 consultation initiatives!

★We have been shortlisted for Modeshift STARS National School Travel Awards 2023 and our team will be attending the Regional Awards event.

E-Safety:

Always be careful when you are using the internet. It can help you to keep in touch with your friends and help your education – but it can also cause harm – to you and to others.

Remember help is always available at school if you are having any problems online.

Don’t be afraid to talk to your teacher or another adult at school.

School of Sanctuary:

Everybody is welcome at Our Lady and St. Joseph.

Our Lady and St. Joseph are the first school in the New Forest to achieve a “School of Sanctuary Award!”

We are so pleased that The Schools of Sanctuary awarding panel have recognised what a welcoming and special place Our Lady and St Joseph Primary is.

Achieving School of Sanctuary status is a rigorous process which acknowledges the school’s commitment to embracing values that are seated in equal worth of all. This has taken all of the school community on a journey, focussing on supporting local basic needs, discussions and action around the need to spread opportunity and life chances and finally, to target and challenge unjustified inequalities. Pupils and staff at Our Lady and St Joseph have worked tirelessly to ensure their school community is a safe, warm and welcoming haven for all, where learners thrive.

As part of their work towards the award, pupils have learned more sanctuary for those at home and across the globe. They have learned about the plight of refugees and asylum seekers around the world. Our children are united in their aim to ensure that our school is a place of refuge for all those in need.
